WHAT IS UFB?

It is easy to get confused by the different organizations providing services to the blind across the country. Their names and abbreviations are often similar even if their services are not. You have maybe heard of UFB, UCB, USDB, NFB, DSBVI, AFB and so on.

We wish to clarify for you what The Utah Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired (UFB) is and precisely what our mission is. Perhaps it is easiest to begin with what we are not. UFB is not a political organization and we have no political agenda. We do not take any position on any controversies in the field of blindness. We do not advocate for or against any particular issue. We are not a membership organization.

What is UFB then? UFB is a non-profit foundation dedicated to providing opportunities and teaching skills to blind and visually impaired children and youth that will enhance their lives and promote their independence. Our sole purpose is to provide meaningful and educational programs and services to those who participate in our programs.

UFB was founded in 1988 by a group of professionals in the field of blindness who felt that a non-profit organization in Utah dedicated solely to providing services to children and youth who are blind could fill the gap in many areas of needed instruction. For the past 15 years UFB has provided services in athletic programs, daily living skills instruction, recreational programs, and social skills programs and other areas. Our purpose is to provide services in areas that cannot be adequately addressed by educational or other agencies. We welcome and encourage feedback and suggestions from parents, students, and professionals.

UFB very much appreciates the support given to us over the years by the parents and families of those we have served, the many professionals and volunteers who have donated significant amounts of time to ensure that we provide quality programs and opportunities, and to the many financial backers of UFB.
