Descriptions of UFB Summer Camps

Camps this year are a cooperative effort between the Utah School for the Blind and the Utah Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Descriptions of each of camp are listed below along with the intended age group. Students may attend as many of the camps as are appropriate for them. Only one application is necessary and you can indicate on the application which camp(s) you are applying for. Do not send any money with the application; camp fees will be collected after you receive a confirmation of camps to which the student has been accepted. Fee waivers are available for all camps and should be applied for with the camp application.

June 9—July 19: UWIN (Ages 16 and older—Held in Salt Lake)

This six week program conducted by the Utah Industries for the Blind begins in June and goes through most of July. Students work at a summer job and receive wages. On the job supervision is provided by the UWIN staff as needed and by the employer. Students live on-site during the week and receive O&M instruction and spend evenings learning to plan meals, shop, prepare meals, clean, wash clothes and other skills including budgeting and banking. Evening instruction and supervision is provided by the UWIN staff. The UWIN program is for blind and visually impaired students who are 16 years of age or older. A separate application is required for UWIN. Conducted by the Utah Industries for the Blind.

June 16—June 21: Expanded Core Camp (Ages 12-15)

June 23—June 26: Expanded Core Camp (Ages 8-12)

Expanded Core Camp combines fun activities with instructional learning in selected components of the "Expanded Core Curriculum for Blind and Visually Impaired Children." This year we will be concentrating on functional cooking skills that students can use on a regular basis at home. Secondary skills may also be covered such as social skills, other independent living skills, communication skills, technology, orientation & mobility, recreation skills, and vocational skills. Students will leave camp with a collection of recipes they have used at camp. We will be open to suggestions from students and parents as to things they would like to learn to cook. This camp will take place in the cottages on the Ogden campus of USDB.

June 26—June 29: Mini Camp (Braille Reading)

This three-day camp is for students using Braille who would like to work on increasing their Braille reading speed (and comprehension). There will be some REALLY fun camp activities mixed in, but the majority of the time will be spent on Braille activities that will help students become faster and more efficient Braille readers. This is not for beginning braille readers; participants must be able to read Braille and know the Braille contractions. Camp held in the cottages on the Ogden campus of USDB.

July 7—July 10: Outdoor Camp (Ages 10 and older)

Outdoor camp consists of a two or three night outdoor camping experience with fishing, hiking, crafts and similar camping activities. We will have a couple focus areas this year in which campers can select to participate. One area will be photography. The second has not yet been decided but may be music related. Location for Outdoor Camp has not yet been finalized but will probably be different than previous years.

July 14—July 17: Mini Camp (Swimming)

This mini camp will focus on swimming instruction although other fun activities, including additional water activities will be included. We will focus on students ages 8-16 who are non-swimmers but instruction will also be available for students who wish to become better swimmers, learn new swimming strokes, or prepare to compete on school or other swim teams. Swimming is a Paralympic Sport and we would like to have some future Paralympians participate. Camp held on the Ogden campus of USDB.

July 17—July 20: Mini Camp (Recreational Activities)

The focus of this camp will be on participating in a variety of recreational activities. Some of these activities will be on-site while others will be out in the community. Other activities, such as preparing some of our own meals will also be included. Camp held on the Ogden campus of USDB.

        Aug. 4—Aug. 10: Sports Camp (7th—12th graders)

This camp focuses on developing or improving athletic skills in specific sports including goalball, Judo, swimming, wrestling, track & field, personal training, and other similar sports. Teambuilding and evening activities are also a major part of Sports Camp. This is a physically rigorous camp and participants must be willing to participate in strenuous activities. Camp held in Lehi.
